The show ‘Black Spring’ questions the Occidental look on Africa, through its bodies. The movie grasps the dancing matter of the show which, confronted to pictures of today’s Africa, broadens our thoughts towards a key issue: the look of the other on oneself. Taken out of their usual context and treated in quite an abstract way, the dancer’s moves are shot so that they reflect very unique experiences. ‘Black Spring’, the last creation of choreographer Heddy Maalem, filmed by Benoît Dervaux and interspersed with scenes of today’s Africa, pinpoints the political and cultural influences of African Modern Dance.
