During a live performance in the local RTBF studios, Jean-Pierre Verheggen put some names of his own invention on anonymous portrait shot in the Liège area in 1984. The confessed (or unspeakable) goal was a double one. He wanted to revive the tradition of the ‘Aunt Sally’ game in the fairground art, but mainly, as a writer, he tried to make an inventory of all the popular identification possibilities in Wallonia: from jolly and mocking nicknames, place-names and litany nursery rhymes. The result is the extreme opposite of the police anthropometrical portraits or the cold, perforated identity card. In fact, what we can see and hear is a merry and warm celebration of the Walloon language: free, impertinent, and therefore, international.
