In the early stages of the fight against the French colonial authorities in 1945, many young Vietnamese rallied to join Ho Chi Minh’s forces. Many of these, however, instead of cutting themselves off from their country once they were in France, became involved in the anti-colonial fight. This was the case for two of the characters in this film, who walked off a ship in Marseille in 1948. One of them, Tin, became an agricultural engineer and went back in 1962 to North Vietnam, where he held a high-level position. The other, Hoï, stayed in France, where he completed his entire career at IBM.
Today, thanks to AREBCO, an organisation of Vietnamese retirees in France, Tin and Hoï are working together on an agricultural development project adapted to the ethnic minorities of Vietnam’s High Plateau.
The account of this renewed friendship is a reflection of history, of the links uniting Vietnam and France beyond the dark hour of colonisation.
