Missionary among the White people tells the story of the complex heritage of colonial Catholicism through the parable of the evangelised evangelist. Through a fascinating reversal of history, Belgium has become today a land of mission, where great numbers of congolese priests are called upon to help out a Church that is hard up for callings and to contain the de-christianisation of this old catholic land. While in Congo a few old clergymen, survivors of colonial times, are hanging on for dear life to their land of evangelisation, missionaries of new kind are officiating in priestless Belgian parishes, compensating the discomfort of their precarious status as ” interim emigrants” with an energy, an inventiveness and a rigor by which their flock are both seduced and disconcerted.
