Max Steiner, a western photographer-reporter, sets out to track down the gold hunters who still continue today to sift the ashes of Jews gassed at Auschwitz. There, in the town close by the camp, he will be put to the test, will experience the confrontation between Poles and Jews to which there is only one outcome – forgiveness or silence. In particular he will have to resolve the fundamental problem, that of the profanation of the world’s largest cemetery. Does the image of these gold-seekers exist? If not, can it be staged fabricated? « Auschwitz, a Business Trip » is a film in which documentary and fiction intertwine, in which Auschwitz remains this inexhaustible source of emotions whenever reason fails to digest the inexplicable.
